Trade Anaylsis: Scouting the prospects dealt for Ziegler (7.9.16)
Traded to Arizona
with Jose Almonte for Brad
Ziegler (July 2016) |
Physical Description: Athletic, lean. Slightly
undersized. Has room for added strength.
Hit:
Same stance from both sides of the plate. Square, utilizes a toe-tap
timing device. Plus bat speed from both sides. Short, level swing. Quick
hands, strong feel for hit. Advanced approach for age. Has shown a
willingness to use all fields. Strong understanding of strike zone and
solid pitch recognition skills. Doesn't do a great job incorporating lower
half in swing yet. Potential average-to-better hit tool.
Power: Sneaky power for someone his size; average raw power.
Potential below-average game power. Swing isn't tailored to hit home runs,
more hard contact into the gaps. Can pull hands in and turn on ball
inside. Limited power to the opposite field.
Arm:
Average arm. Enough for second base. Could pass at other positions, but
not for an extended period of time.
Field:
Average potential at second base. Doesn't have the greatest instincts or
fluidity. Struggles with footowork especially when making throw on double
play coming across second base bag. Not a natural fielder and doesn't have
the softest hands. Will get better with more experience.
Run: Above-average speed. Has been caught stealing too much in
the low minors for someone with his speed.
Career Notes:
Relatively new to the game of baseball and only started playing baseball a
year or so before signing. Comes from a part of Venezuela near the
Colombia border where soccer is far more popular than baseball. Twin
brother Luis Alexander is an outfielder in the Red Sox system.
Summation: Ceiling of a regular at second base.
Reasonably high floor for someone his age due to advanced feel at the
plate. Doesn't have the raw tools his brother has, but much more polished
player overall. Most likely outcome is he develops into a solid utility
player. If he reaches his potential, could be a bat first second basement
capable of hitting .280 with 10-15 home runs a year.
