Traded to Arizona with Luis Alejandro Basabe for Brad Ziegler
(July 2016)
Scouting Report: Lanky, projectable frame that could
support added size. Solid athlete. Loose arm, but delivery is stiff and
mechanical. Throws from the third base side of the rubber with a high
three-quarters arm slot. Has a trunk twist prior to coming forward and
stabs and pronates his wrist behind his body. He keeps the ball behind his
body, creating some deception in his delivery. Comes across his body and
has the tendency to yank the ball glove side with cut that comes from how
his wrist works. Will drop his arm angle at times. Fastball sits 88-90
mph, topping out at 93 mph, but will also show a 86-87 mph two-seam
fastball with arm-side run. Needs to improve command and control.
Secondary offerings include a changeup and curveball. Mid-70s curveball
shows some potential, with decent snap, deep break, and nice shape. Pitch
can get slurvy at times, but at its best when thrown 77-78 mph with
two-plane break. Will show harder, slider-like version in the low-80s on
occasion. Changeup works 79-81 mph with some drop. Has some feel for the
pitch, and when he gets on top of it, he can turn it over. Pitch has shown
bat-missing potential in the low-minors. Has a long way to go
developmentally, but has made progress each year since he entered the
organization.
