Scouting Scratch: Anthony Ranaudo (3.28.13)

Scouting Report: Was considered the top pitcher in the entire draft class and the second-best overall draft prospect heading into the 2010 season after going 12-3 with a 3.04 ERA and striking out 159 batters in 124.1 innings in 2009, on the way to leading LSU to a national championship. Fell to Red Sox due to forearm injury. Highly projectable arm with frame to withstand the rigors of starting at the professional level. High 3/4 arm slot.  Fastball sits 91-93 mph and tops out at 95 mph. Projection to add sitting velocity as he gets stronger.  Fringe-average-to-average fastball command. Can open shoulder early, which leads to reduced command in spells.  Inconsistent downward leverage.  Arm drag reduces velocity and ability to stay on top of the ball.  Has struggled keeping delivery consistent, which has caused both fastball command and velocity to regress in 2012.  Has consistently had trouble holding velocity above 89-91 mph for extended stretches.   78-82 mph hammer curveball grades as plus. Tight rotation and excellent depth through the strike zone. Able to bury out of the strike zone or drop it in for a strike. Outstanding feel for his curveball. Future swing and miss pitch at major league level.  Below-average 81-83 mph changeup.  Varying arm-speed causes change to approach plate flat, with little drop.  Can show feel and fade, but  needs work honing offering.  Average potential.  Lack of development with pitch will push him to a bullpen role.  Appears to over-think things.  Needs to  be more loose. Still learning to incorporate lower half into pitching mechanics.  Has some rigidness in delivery, which can wear him out after laboring.   Room for growth as becomes more polished. Third starter ceiling at major league level.
