Traded to Detroit with Yoenis Cespedes and Gabe Speier for Rick Porcello
(Dec. 2014)
Scouting Report:
Throws from high 3/4 arm slot. His delivery is
somewhat arduous with long arm action and effort behind. Fastball sits 92-93 mph and tops out at 94-95 mph. Can
sit in the mid-90s in short bursts out of the bullpen. Four-seam fastball
is on the straight side and hittable when elevated. 90-92 MPH two-seam
fastball shows improved arm-side run against right-handed batters. Pitch
did not quite play up as hoped after move to the bullpen. Average
fastball command. Used to primarily rely on his fastball, but his usage
of the pitch decreased as he started to integrate his slider more into his
arsenal in late 2014. Slider works in the mid-80s with tight rotation
and depth that misses bats. Uses slider as out pitch later in the count
but could improve on throwing his slider for strikes and featuring earlier
in counts. Inconsistent with snap at times, but can flash as a plus pitch.
At higher velocities can look more like a cutter.
Average command of offering. Also throws a below-average 86-87 mph
changeup as a look pitch. Lacks separation from his fastball. Can be home-run prone. Fights delivery at times, which reduces the
command of his arsenal. Converted to a full-time reliever in early 2012.
Projects as a middle releiver at the major-league level, with the ceiling
of a 7th-8th inning setup man in peak seasons. Missed
the 2008 college season due to Tommy John surgery.
