2012 Prospect Preview
Weems eager for his first season (3.19.12)
Scouting Scratch (9.27.16)
Signed with Oakland
(Dec. 2019) |
PPhysical Description: Athletic, projectable pitcher’s
frame. Looks listed height and weight.
Mechanics:
Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with no windup. Short arm
action. Some effort in delivery including a head whack. Quick, live arm.
Fastball: 93-95 mph. Tops out at 96 mph. On the straight
side. Command has a ways to go. Still working on gaining a feel for the
pitch. Plus velocity, but pitch could play down due to lack of movement.
Cutter/Slider: 89-91 mph. Hard, short horizontal break. Pitch
shows bite and bat missing ability. Potential average offering.
Changeup: 84-86 mph. Late vertical, splitter like
movement. Inconsistent pitch, lacks feel. Work in progress, but will show
flashes. Currently projects as a potential below-average offering.
Curveball: 77-79 mph. True overhand 12-to-6
breaker. Long break and depth when he snaps it off. Inconsistent release,
doesn’t always finish offering. Potential average pitch. Didn’t throw in
outings scouted in 2018 season.
Career Notes:
Converted to pitching in May 2016. Drafted as a catcher, struggled at the
plate throughout his pro career, save for a short stint with Salem at the
end of 2014 likely driven by an unsustainable average on balls in play.
Moved to first base to start 2016, but still struggled at the plate.
Participated in 2016 Fall Instructional League. Also participated in 2011
and 2012 as a catcher.
Summation: Projects as an high end organizational
reliever, but still early on the developmental timeline as he only
converted to pitching in 2016. Strong, athletic frame and live arm give
him a chance but needs to improve command and control and improve
consistency with all his pitches. Fastball and cutter have improved as the
2018 season went on and if he continues to make steady progress could
develop into a major league bullpen arm.
Pre-conversion Scouting Report: Lean, lanky
build. Smooth, compact swing, but presently hits with a lot of upper body.
Solid-average power projection. Brings head of the bat quickly through
zone. Needs improvement creating plate coverage with his swing. Tends to
open hips early to pull off the ball. Moves well laterally on defense,
with quick reactions and solid body control. Average arm. Moved off of
catcher to first base during the 2016 season. |
