Scouting Scratch (5.3.17)
Released (May 2019) |
Physical Description: Undersized for a corner outfielder.
Has a filled-out frame with minimal projection remaining. Solid athlete.
Hit: Short, contact-oriented swing. Swing is geared
for hard line drives. Has improved approach since he entered the
organization. Still somewhat of a free swinger with fringy pitch
recognition skills. Has trouble with breaking balls. Still can be
aggressive early in the count, looking to attack fastballs. Was once
primarily a pull hitter, but since 2016 has been better about making
contact to all fields. Is comfortable extending and going to left field on
pitches away or pulling his hands in and staying inside the baseball on
pitches on the inner half. Potential below-average hit tool.
Power: Not a major part of his game given his size and
swing path. Should have a fair share of extra-base hits, but below-average
power potential.
Arm: Below-average arm strength.
Throws lack carry and zip. Best suited for left field, but passable in
right field.
Field: Lacks instincts and takes poor
routes to the ball. Doesn't have a quick first step, but above-average
speed gives him more of a margin for error. Doesn't look like a natural
outfielder. Has seen limited time in center field. Fringe-average
defensive profile in the corner outfield.
Run:
Above-average speed, but that doesn't translate on the bases due to
below-average instincts on the bases.
Career Notes:
Was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the Dec. 2016 Rule 5 draft and
returned just before the start of the season. Missed time in 2017 due to
right hand tendinitis.
Summation: Projects as an
organizational, Triple-A depth player. May get a cup of coffee at some
point, but profile isn't ideal for a bench role as he is undersized and
has above-average speed but isn't a great baserunner and doesn't play
center field. Could add some value at the plate, but a team is likely to
have better offensive options who can play a similar corner outfield. |
