Fastball command, change key to Scott’s success (6.12.14)
Scouting Scratch: Portland Arms (7.3.14)
Claimed off waivers by Cincinnati (December 2018) |
Physical Description: Filled out frame, strong lower
half.
Mechanics: Typically throws from
a three-quarters arm slot, but will vary arm slot at times depending
on the situation and handedness of the hitter. Simple, controlled
delivery. High leg kick, motion fades towards first after release.
Fastball: Sits 86-89 mph with heavy arm-side run.
Able to take a little off the pitch when he wants to get more movement.
Breaking Ball: Historically has thrown an 11-to-5
curveball that works 71-73 mph with long, two-plane break. Strong feel for
the pitch. Added more slurvy action in 2018, with the pitch sitting in the
74-77 mph range.
Changeup: 79-81 mph. Straight
changeup that shows late drop. Has solid feel for pitch. Effective against
righties when it’s on, but can tend to not get enough separation from
his fastball at times, making the pitch far less effective. Has become less of a part of his repertoire over time.
Career
Notes: Undrafted out of Florida State, played briefly in the
North American Baseball League before signing. Pitched minimally out of
the bullpen for FSU after transferring from Broward Community College.
Indy ball manager was Jose Canseco. Excelled through Double-A and got an
extended major league look in 2017. Had left elbow surgery in October
2017. Surprisingly failed to make MLB roster out of camp in 2018, but
pitched well in Pawtucket and resumed role as up-and-down reliever.
Summation: Potential low-leverage,
up-and-down left-handed specialist. Has had impressive reverse-platoon splits
against right-handed hitters during his time in the Majors. |
