Physical Description:
Tall, strong frame with minimal remaining projection.
Mechanics: Throws from the first base side of the rubber, using
a three-quarters arm slot. Controlled delivery with arm action that is a
little long behind.
Fastball: 92-94 mph. Tops out
at 96 mph. Has some arm-side run. Average command, and above-average
control. Does a good job working down in the zone and can locate to both
sides of the plate. Generates easy velocity and a lot of groundballs. Potential
solid-average to plus offering.
Changeup: 79-82
mph. Uses circle changeup grip. Advanced feel for the pitch. Shows drop
and is thrown with deceptive arm speed. Can pull the string on the pitch.
Solid velocity separation from fastball. Has the confidence to throw the
pitch in any count. Potential plus offering, true out pitch at the big
league level.
Slider: 83-85 mph. Horizontal
movement, but work in progress at this point. Does not throw it often and
pitch is inconsistent. Could be effective as a pitch used to steal a
strike and give hitters something else to think about other than his
changeup.
Career Notes: Threw sidearm
for two seasons prior to the 2013 season. Velocity jumped into the low-90s
with the new delivery. High school coach was former Red Sox relief pitcher
Calvin Schiraldi.
Summation: Potential middle
reliever with high floor and low risk. Has the two-pitch mix and strong
command and control profile to develop into a useful reliever at the major
league level. |
