State of the System 2020: Noteworthy Extras (5.26.2020)

Released (May 2020)

Physical Description: Solid frame. Sturdy lower-half. Minimal remaining projection.

Mechanics: Throws from a high-three quarters arm slot from the third base side. Delivery has effort. Long arm action with a stab behind. Rocks back, then is quick coming forward. Some deception with his front side. Doesn’t consistently repeat his delivery and has trouble maintaining a consistent release point.

Fastball: 90-92 mph. Tops out at 94 mph. Can dial up his velocity when necessary. Has shown more velocity in the past in a bullpen role. Pitch shows sink when down in the zone. When left up, pitch is straight and very hittable. Lacks life. Below-average command and control profile at present. Hasn’t shown bat-missing ability in a starting role. Potential fringe-average pitch.

Cutter: 85-87 mph. Short, horizontal movement. Pitch shows bite at its best. Showed the most potential of any secondary pitch he showed during tbe 2019 season. Potential average offering.

Curveball: 78-80 mph. Vertical, long, 11-to-5 shape. Doesn’t consistently finish, but when he does, pitch shows depth. Used to throw much slower, slurvy version. Below-average potential.

Splitter: 82-84 mph. Throws sparingly. Pitch is on the firm side. Lacks feel. Shows fade on occasion. Lacks separation from his fastball.

Career Notes: Served as Kentucky's closer in 2018. Signed for $88,000 over slot as a draft-eligible sophomore. Pitched 2 games for Brewster in the Cape Cod League in 2018 after being drafted and before signing. Participated in the 2018 Fall Instructional League.

Summation: Currently profiles as a minor league depth arm. Delivery and arsenal point to a long-term bullpen role. Has the frame to start, but secondary stuff and command and control need refinement. Hasn’t shown the ability to consistently miss bats at a rate necessary to succeed against more advanced hitters. Stuff could play up in a bullpen role.
