2015 Top 40 Season in Review
Traded to San Diego with Logan Allen, Carlos Asuaje, and Manuel
Margot for Craig Kimbrel (Nov. 2015) |
Physical Description: Slightly undersized, but athletic
frame. Quick-twitch athlete. Projectable with a solid shortstop’s build.
Needs to add strength.
Hit: Short, compact,
line drive swing. Plus bat speed. Slightly crouched stance, good bat
control. Needs to do a better job of incorporating his lower half into his
swing. Very aggressive at the plate, in the early stages of developing an
approach. Has already shown the ability to work to all fields.
Fringe-average to average potential with his hit tool. Still a long way to
go, a lot will depend on how his approach develops.
Power: Some leverage in swing. Fringe raw, but slightly below-average power
potential due to approach and propsentity for swing and miss. More gap power with plenty of
doubles. Could eventually settle into 8-12 home runs a year.
Arm: Plus-plus arm strength, quick release. Able to make any
throw from shortstop.
Field: Advanced defensive
skill set. Soft hands, fluid actions at short. Makes up for below-average
speed with excellent instincts and a quick first step. Excellent range.
Confident charging the ball. Plays the position with swagger. Potential
plus defensive shortstop.
Run: Below-average
speed. Not a major part of his game. Doesn’t impact his defensive ability.
Not a major threat to steal bases.
Career Notes:
Had a breakout showing at the 2013 Fall Instructional League.
Summation: Everyday regular potential as a defense-first
shortstop. Has the bat-to-ball skills and has shown the willingness to be
more patient and a developing approach to play at a premium defensive
position. Won’t be an impact bat, but will more than make up for it with
plus-to-better defensive profile. Bat will determine ultimate upside,
whether it’s more of a utility profile or as an everyday regular. |
