Scouting Report:
Dominican shortstop who signed with the Red Sox in May 2008. Small
frame. Unlikely to add a lot of muscle. Athletic, with smooth and fluid
reactions. Soft glove and quick hands. Solid-average-to-better range.
Shows ability to cover ground to both his left and right via smooth first
step. Solid-average arm, but inaccurate. Tends to rush plays in the field
leading to unforced errors. Possesses defensive tools to round into
above-average defender. Level of concentration and consistent output of
effort must improve. Tendency to float and drift for stretches. Generates
solid-average batspeed, but swing is on the long side. Struggles to square
pitches up, especially off-speed stuff. Below-average pitch recognition
and over-aggressive approach. Below-average power ceiling. Plus speed.
Offensive progression is tied into improving levels of contact by
eliminating hole on outer third, developing approach, and incorporating
hands into swing to hit inside the baseball.
