Scouting Scratch: Espinoza and V. Diaz (7.11.16)
Trade Analysis: Scouting the Espinoza for Pomeranz deal (7.14.16) |
Traded to San Diego for Drew Pomeranz (July 2016)
Physical Description: Doesn’t have prototypical, tall,
thin projectable frame. Average height. Listed weight of 190 pounds looks
accurate. Solid athlete. Some physical projection remaining; room to add
strength as he physically matures.
Mechanics:
Three-quarters arm slot. Clean mechanics and low-effort, repeatable
delivery, generating plus arm speed with loose arm action. Does a very
good job of repeating his delivery. Has quick feet and a solid pickoff
move.
Fastball: 94-97 mph. Has topped out at 100+
mph. Explosive offering with plus life. Already has shown bat-missing
potential. Advanced command and control of offering given his age and lack
of experience. Potential plus-plus pitch.
Curveball:
72-74 mph. 12-to-6 shape and late, tight break. Advanced feel and
confidence in the pitch. With improved consistency, will develop into a
true out pitch at the big league level. Potential plus-plus offering.
Changeup: 79-83 mph. Inconsistent and a work in
progress at this time. When at its best will be thrown with same deceptive
arm speed and show late fade. Excellent separation from fastball. Clear
third pitch at this point, but potential plus offering with refinement.
Summation: Top-of-the-rotation, ace potential. Has
the combination of stuff, delivery and feel for pitching to be one of the
top pitchers in all of baseball if things break right. Potential for three
plus-or-better offerings with plus command profile. Stuff and feel is very
advanced for age. Type of pitching prospect who doesn’t come along very
often. |
