Physical
Description: Thick, stocky right-handed hitter. Soft
body, maxed out physically.
Hit: Starts
vertical and slightly open with his hands high. Utilizes a toe
tap timing device. Quiet pre-pitch. Swing is on the long side.
Fringe-average bat speed. Struggles with velocity, especially up
in the zone. Aggressive approach. Goes up looking to swing the
bat. Has some trouble recognizing spin when behind in the count.
Will make the pitcher pay for missed locations with fastballs.
Hits a lot of balls in the air. Potential below-average hit
tool.
Power: Plus raw power, especially
to the pull side. Has shown the ability to drop the shoulder and
turn on the ball with authority. Game power will depend on how
much contact he makes and how his approach develops.
Run: 20 speed. Not a part of his game. Takes a
while to get going and slow down the line.
Field:
Surprisingly agile for his size. Good footwork around the base.
Below-average range, but has soft hands and is confident
scooping balls in the dirt. Potential average defender. |

Arm: Average arm. Plenty for first base.
Career Notes: Often called "Big Joe," including
on the scoreboard during home games, Davis is a fan favorite due
to his look, power, and boisterous personality. Graduated holding University of
Houston records for home runs (53), RBIs (223), extra-base hits
(107), and total bases (503), as well as American Athletic
Conference records for hits (288), home runs, RBI, doubles (53),
and total bases. Named either the first or second team
all-conference all four years at Houston. Missed some time in
2019 with an abdomen strain. Had a number of clutch, late-inning
at-bats during Lowell's 2019 playoff run, including a walk-off
home run in Game 2 of the championship series to force a
decisive third game (see photo above). Lived
with teammate Stephen Scott in a trailer during the 2021 season
and the two, dubbed the "Meatball Gang," held weekly cookouts
for teammates on Monday off days.
Summation:
Projects as a solid organizational player. Great clubhouse
personality and teammate. Lacks a carrying tool, but has the
offensive ability to stick around for a while as a very useful
depth player. Strong work ethic. Has shown a flair for the
dramatic and is not phased in late-game, pressure situations.
Type of player every organization needs.
