Physical
Description: Athletic build, strong lean muscle. Filled out
especially in his lower half.
Hit: Smooth,
line-drive, middle/opposite field approach with the ability to hit to all
fields. Added a leg kick timing mechanism to break out of a long slump in
2014. Plus bat speed and hip rotation in swing mechanics. Advanced
knowledge of the strike zone and understands what he can and cannot
handle. Works deep into counts and consistently gets ahead. Tracks the
ball extremely well. Struggles with advanced left-handed pitching. Future
plus hit tool.
Power: Strength for power, but not
with current approach. More likely to come as doubles into the gaps. Line
drive-oriented swing. At his best when he doesn’t sell out for power.
Strength and quickness in his swing. Long ball will emerge with time.
Future fringe-average-to-average power potential.
Arm:
Poor footwork often hampers arm strength and accuracy. Accuracy is erratic
and inconsistent. Room for improvement. Average arm strength.
Field: Lacks agility in lower half and side-to-side
quickness. Gets by on plus instincts. Working hard to improve.
Fringe-average defense. After playing much of his career at third base, is
now a utility player who primarily plays left field in addition to third
and first base. Took flyballs in right field before games in 2014, but never
played the position in a game.
Run: Always
looking to take extra base. Average runner with great instincts. Not a
burner, but can steal a bag on pure instincts and ability to read the
pitcher. Smart on the bases.
Career Notes: Comes
from a baseball family. Both parents are baseball coaches and his younger
brother Gavin was a first-round selection by the New York Mets in 2012.
Committed to LSU before signing. Played for the Team USA 18-and-Under team
in the summer of 2009. Led the minors in on-base percentage in 2013. Went
into an extended slump in 2014, likely due to pressing to hit for more
power, which resulted in his pulling off of pitches early.
Summation: Future regular, everyday, solid contributor.
Left-handed hitter with an above-average hit tool and plate discipline to
draw walks and generate high on-base totals. Still needs to prove he can
handle advanced left-handed pitching. Positional flexibility to play third
base and left field, but needs to improve footwork and defensive tools.
Plus-plus instincts, make-up and eagerness to learn. High baseball IQ;
knows exactly what he needs to do. |
