2012 Prospect Preview
Scouting Scratch: Balcom-Miller sharp (5.9.12) |
Relased (March 2014)
Scouting Report:
Strong frame with a well-developed lower half. Rigid,
stiff, and jerky pitching mechanics, but consistently repeats release
point. Shorter with his arm action. Expends a lot of energy via his
delivery and tends to tire himself out. Fastball sits 89-90 mph with
excellent sink and run in on the hands of right-handed hitters. Fastball
shows heavy, downward action that makes it difficult to elevate. Average
command, as he has difficulties reeling it in for stretches. Heavily
fastball dependent. Average-to-better 81-83 mph changeup that shows drop
and occasional fade. Generates solid arm speed when throwing it, but can
leave it up in the zone too much. Currently his best pitch. Below-average
80-82 mph slider. Lacks tight break and consistent finish out of the
strike zone. Throws from same slot as fastball and can improve to an
average offering. Pitches to contact and when on with his command
generates a high amount of groundballs. Not afraid to come after batters
and work inside. Currently lacks a consistent swing-and-miss offering.
Stuff best suited for short outings. Ceiling of a sixth- or seventh-inning
reliever at the major-league level. |
