Traded to San Diego
with Logan Allen, Javier Guerra, and Manuel Margot for Craig Kimbrel (Nov.
2015) |
Physical
Description: Undersized, small, athletic frame.
Hit: Short, compact swing. Very direct to the ball.
Polished approach with solid pitch recognition skills and knowledge of the
strike zone. Will hit to all fields. Strong feel for hitting, but only
average bat speed. Excellent bat control. Knack for making contact, will
make pitchers work. Potential average hit tool.
Power:
Below-average power potential that will play more to the gap variety in
the big leagues. Can square the ball up with backspin.
Arm: Fringe-average arm strength. Plays best at second base.
Passable at third base and in the outfield.
Field:
Average potential. Soft hands, fluid actions and great instincts. Has
versatility to play multiple positions and is being developed as a true
utility player.
Run: Fringe-average. Not a major
part of his game.
Career Notes: Represented by
agent Joshua Kusnick, who also writes a column for Baseball Prospectus
and has said that he did not begin representing Asuaje until very late in
the draft preparation process. Played shortstop in college but was
announced as a second baseman when drafted.
Summation:
Lacks stand-out tools, but still profiles as a bench utility player.
Strong instincts and great makeup allow him to get the most out of what he
has. Has already played second base, third base, shortstop, and left field
as a professional, but body and tools fit best at second base. Versatility
will serve him well going forward. |
