2012 Prospect Preview
Weems eager for his first season (3.19.12)
Scouting Scratch (9.27.16)
Athletic, projectable pitcher’s frame. Looks
listed height and weight.
Mechanics: Throws from a high three-quarters
arm slot with no windup. Short arm action. Some effort in delivery
including a head whack. Quick, live arm.
92-94 mph. Tops out at 96 mph. On the straight
side. Command has a ways to go. Still working on gaining a feel for the
pitch. Plus velocity, but pitch could play down due to lack of movement.
Curveball: 72-75 mph. True overhand 12-to-6
breaker. Long break and depth when he snaps it off. Inconsistent release,
doesn’t always finish offering. Potential average pitch.
Changeup: 81-83 mph. Lacks feel. Slows
delivery. On the straight side. On occasion will show fade down and way
from left-handed hitters. Work in progress, below average potential.
Career Notes: Converted to pitching in May
2016. Drafted as a catcher, struggled at the plate throughout his pro
career, save for a short stint with Salem at the end of 2014 likely driven
by an unsustainable average on balls in play. Moved to first base to start
2016, but still struggled at the plate. Participated in 2016 Fall Instructional League. (Also
participated in 2011 and 2012 as a catcher.)
As a recent convert, Weems is raw and will need to make major strides
to project as anything more than an organizational arm. He has a good
frame and strong arm, but is more a thrower than a pitcher at this point.
Showing the early makings of a three-pitch mix, but needs to needs to
improve consistency with all three offerings. In the early stages of
developing command of his pitches. Curveball has shown more promise than
changeup at this point and could develop into a decent compliment to his
(Pre-conversion Scouting Report:
Lean, lanky build. Smooth, compact swing,
but presently hits with a lot of upper body. Solid-average power
projection. Brings head of the bat quickly through zone. Needs improvement
creating plate coverage with his swing. Tends to open hips early to pull
off the ball. Moves well laterally on defense, with quick reactions and
solid body control. Average arm. Moved off of catcher to first base during
the 2016 season.)
