Notes from the Field: Devers power display... (5.6.15)
2015 Top 40 Season in Review
Claimed off waivers by Chicago-NL (May 2019) |
Physical Description: Solid pitcher’s frame with minimal
remaining projection. Good athlete.
Mechanics:
High three-quarters arm slot. Arm action works. Loose arm. Simple
delivery, but struggles to repeat it at times.
Fastball:
91-93 mph. Has topped out at 95 mph when used in short bursts in a bullpen
role. On the straight side with average life. Hittable when up in the
zone. Can locate to both sides of the plate. Advanced control, average
command of offering. Potential average offering.
Cutter:
86-89 mph. Short, sharp horizontal break. Feel for pitch. Potential
average offering.
Curveball: 80-82 mph.
Two-plane, power curveball. Shows depth and can bury down in the zone to
miss bats. Potential fringe-average offering.
Changeup:
82-84 mph. Pitch bottoms out to the glove side, but is on the firm side.
Uses sparingly, will show drop on occasion. Below-average potential.
Career Notes: Came into 2014 as a potential top-100
draft pick following an excellent showing in the Cape Cod League in 2013.
Began that season as a starter, but he suffered a forearm laceration on
his pitching arm which caused him to miss three weeks and forced him back
to the bullpen. Had Tommy John surgery after sophomore year of high
school.
Summation: Profiles as an emergency up and
down starter with a ceiling of a fringe number five starter. Average three
pitch mix, but lacks an above-average offering. In a bullpen role,
profiled as a middle reliever due to his lack of a plus secondary
offering. Will pound the strike zone with his fastball and can miss bats
with cutter. |
