Scouting Report: Wiry-framed first baseman out of Colombia. Spent five years in the Yankees organization and was released in late 2008 after returning from an early 2007 injury. Went on to earn MVP honors in the 2008-2009 Colombian Winter League and Rookie of the Year honors in the Golden Baseball League in 2009. Signed with the Sox soon after the completion of the 2009 season. Solid defensive player at first base. Moves well laterally. Can also play left field, but a work in progress in the outfield. Compact swing from the right side of the plate. Adept at turning on inside fastballs and pulling hands inside the baseball to drive balls with loft. Will need to learn to hit breaking balls in the upper levels and recognize them quicker out of pitchers hands. Currently over-commits against them. Solid-average power potential. Old for the level of competition. Can project as a major league bench player with refinement of strike zone management and selectiveness.
