Q&A with Derrik Gibson
2009 Prospect Preview
The Ladder - 7.1.2009
Road to the Show: Derrik Gibson |
Signed with Baltimore (Nov. 2014)
Scouting Report:
Small-framed utility player with playing experience in both the infield
and outfield, but plays primarily OF now. Has
excellent fundamentals on defense. Quick, soft hands and plus range.
Accurate arm. Throwing mechanics are jerky, and he short arms his throws.
Has trouble making long throws from deep in the hole. Average bat speed,
but lack of strength causes bat to drag through the zone. Has trouble
pulling pitches consistently with authority. Patient approach with a plan
at the plate. Will look to all fields. Tends to swing and miss too much.
Minimal present power, which projects as below-average power as he
matures. Plus runner when he entered the organization and for his first
few years, but now a fringe-average runner. Solid base-running instincts.
Ceiling of a utility infielder if he can continue to show improved contact skills. Began playing
outfield in 2014 to improve versatility, mostly in left field.
