Scouting Scratch: Fall Instructs Part Two (10.9.14)
The Write-Up: Kopech, Almonte, De Jesus (10.14.15)
Scouting Scratch: Steen, De Jesus... (6.24.16)
Tall left-hander with a solid frame. Thick at present, but frame could
support added weight as he physically matures. Minimal remaining
Mechanics: Works from the third base
side of the rubber. Uses three-quarters arm slot with high leg kick and
long arm action. Some front-side deception caused by a slight pause at the
top of his delivery. Comes across his body and has a lot of moving parts
in his delivery. Fringe-average arm speed.
88-90 mph, topping out at 91 mph. Loses velocity as he works deeper into
games, ending up more in the 86-88 mph range. Could add velocity as he
physically matures, as he lacks strength at present.
Curveball: 69-72 mph. Long, slow, 1-to-7 break. Sweepy pitch is
more of a breaker that rolls to the plate.
80-82 mph. Has some feel for offering and at its best, will show fade.
Will slow down arm and body at times, telegraphing pitch.
Slider: 82-83 mph. Loose with short, 10-to-4 break. Didnít throw
during look at Spring Training in 2016 or in Lowell at the start of the
regular season in 2016, so may have shelved pitch.
Notes: Trained at the same Venezuelan amateur program as Felix
Summation: Still young, but fringy
arsenal with some projection remaining. Long way to go developmentally and
stuff will need to take a step forward as he progresses through the
system. Lottery ticket at this point.
