Scouting Report:
A Cy Young award winner in 2005, Colon struggled through injury problems
in 2006 and 2007, including a torn rotator cuff, from which pitchers are rarely
able to fully return. Prior to his injuries, his 4-seamer
regularly hit the mid 90s, complemented by an excellent sinker, a decent
slider, and an average changeup. In March 2008, Colon's fastball
was sitting between 88 and 91 mph. In early May, he was
getting up around 93 mph (pay no attention to the inaccurate radar
readings of 97 mph from the
McCoy Stadium gun).
His command remains very good. If his velocity remains around 92-93 mph,
Colon should still have some success as he's smart on the mound and mixes
his pitches well. However, his endurance is
an increasing concern, which is not surprising given his size.
