Scouting Report:
Coming out of high school, Blair was a versatile infielder with sound
defensive fundamentals. The Boston brass saw something special in Blair's
skill set and decided to convert him to a catcher during the 2008-09
offseason. Presently, Blair is fairly thin for a catcher, but he has a
solid lower body, and he should grow into a catcher's frame. Very quick
release. His defensive skills need work, but he has the tools that can be
polished. He still spends some time at third base, where he could be an
adequate fielder. Offensively, he gets the bat on the ball and has some
gap power. Drops his back shoulder a bit when he goes into his swing.
Uncoils on the ball pretty well, but there is some head movement and early
opening of the hips. Also can improve maintaining balanced mechanics
throughout his swing. Average speed. Good power potential. Hard worker
with an excellent attitude. Originally committed to Tulane, Blair signed
with Boston at the 2008 deadline.
